The traditional rauti cutting, led by Teurukura Ariki and Financial Secretary Garth Henderson, symbolised the strong partnership between Government and the people of Aitutaki.
Orometua Rev. Naporoaki Taia led the dedication, who shared a reminder that true purpose comes not just from the building itself, but from the values we carry into it. Integrity, service, humility, and faith.
Financial Secretary Henderson acknowledged Inland Revenue and Customs as a cornerstone of our economy, highlighting their key roles in revenue collection and border protection. He also noted challenges such as the rise of crystal meth in the Pacific and the need for investment and cooperation to address them.
He commented on Aitutaki’s positive growth:"Flights and hotels are full, roads and yards are well maintained, and the community is thriving." However, he stressed that continued economic growth depends on providing strong, reliable services.
The ceremony was attended by just over 30 people, including the Chief of Customs, the RMD Corporate Manager, senior officers from Rarotonga, as well as representatives from both the public and private sectors including brokers, importers, and taxpayers.

With the renovated building, Inland Revenue and Customs in Aitutaki is now better equipped to provide professional and reliable services to the people of Aitutaki.

Really insightful article — especially the way you explained the practical challenges.
In day-to-day work, I often run into similar efficiency issues even in smaller workflows like image optimization.
Lately I’ve been using tools like TinyImagePro to quickly compress and convert images without uploading them anywhere,
which makes things much faster and a bit safer from a privacy standpoint.
Curious how you think these kinds of efficiency trade-offs will evolve over time?
