Vital Statistics and Population Estimates -June Quarter, 2016

Vital Statistics and Population Estimates is a quarterly report on the total and resident population estimate based on vital events of birth and deaths plus net migration data derived from tourism migration data. It also reports on the various vital events such as births, deaths and marriages. Some basic demographic crude rates such as for birth, death and infants deaths including natural increase are also reported in this release.

Quarterly change

In the June 2016 quarter compared with the March 2016 quarter:

  • Cook Islands Total Population estimates (19,300) made minimal increase of 8.4 per cent (1,500 people) when compared to March quarter 2016 (12,000)
  • Resident population was estimated at 11,800. Showing a slight decrease of 1.7 per cent (200 people) when compared to previous quarter (11,800)
  • There were 58 live births registered, an increase of 41.0% with 29 births being females and 26 were males.
  • Total number of Deaths officiated for this quarter stood at 24 deaths, showing a decrease of 33.3 per cent (6 deaths) when compared to March quarter 2016 (18 deaths).

  • Crude birth rates stood at 5.7 and Crude death rates stood at 2.0

  • Total number of Marriages for this quarter stood at 178, increasing by 66.4 per cent (71 marriages) when compared to March quarter 2016 (107 marriages). 92 per cent were non-residents and 8 per cent marriages were residents
