Vital Statistics and Population Estimates - September Quarter, 2019.

Vital Statistics and Population Estimates is a quarterly report on the total and resident population estimate based on vital events of birth and deaths plus net migration data derived from tourism migration data. It also reports on the various vital events such as births, deaths and marriages. Some basic demographic crude rates such as for birth, death and infants deaths including natural increase are also reported in this release.

In the September 2019 quarter compared with the June 2019 quarter

  • Cook Islands Population was estimated at 20,700 for September Quarter 2019, increasing by 2.5 percent
  • Resident population estimate stood at 17,700, a 3.5% increase when compared to previous quarter.
  • Registered births totaled to 64 for September quarter 2019, decreasing by 1.5%. 29 births were males and 35 births were females.
  • Total number of deaths recorded for this quarter stood at 34 deaths (averaging to 3 deaths per week) increasing by 47.8%. 19 deaths were males and 15 deaths were females.
  • Crude birth rates declined by 3.6 births per 1,000 population from 3.8 births per 1,000 population.
  • Crude death rates rose by 1.9 deaths per 1,000 population from 1.3 deaths per 1,000 population
  • Infant mortality rate (deaths to under 1 year age per 1,000 live births) increased to 15.6 deaths to under 1 year age per 1,000 live births. In real numbers there was 1 infant death in the September quarter 2019
  • Total number of Marriages officiated for this quarter stood at 164, increasing by 10.9% when compared to June quarter 2019. 91% of marriages this quarter were Non-Residents and 9% percent were residents

  • Resident Population is currently estimated at 15,900. Increasing by 1.9% (300 people more)
