Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC)

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community is an international organisation that works in public health, geoscience, agriculture, forestry, water resources, disaster management, fisheries, education, statistics, transport, energy, human rights, gender, youth and culture to help Pacific Island people achieve sustainable development. SPC's members are the 22 Pacific Island countries and territories that are the beneficiaries of its services, along with four of the original founding countries.

SPC's work programme is determined by members, and all of its regional initiatives aim to support members' national policies and plans. Indeed, the organisation is owned and governed by its members, who come together at the Conference of the Pacific Community and the Committee of Representatives of Governments and Administrations (CRGA) to make decisions in a spirit of Pacific consensus.

The Cook Islands also participates in a number of other activities managed by the SPC Applied Geoscience and Technology Division (SOPAC). This aims to ensure the earth sciences are utilised fully in order to fulfil the SPC Mission. In the island context the earth sciences comprise geology, geophysics, oceanography and hydrology.

To fulfil this, the division has three technical work programmes:

Ocean and Islands
Water and Sanitation
Disaster Reduction
These three programmes share common technical support services:

Natural Resource Economics
GIS and Remote Sensing
Technical Equipment and Services
Data Management
Publications and Library
The work programme is reviewed annually by a technical advisory group consisting of members, Secretariat representatives and a Science, Technology and Resources Network (STAR).
